UPD: Christmas markets in Berlin, we are going to miss next year.

In a previous post we have written about German Christmas markets in 2015 (with focus on Berlin). We made nice pics at the Christmas market am Alexanderplatz in Berlin.
Just a few days before Christmas and New Year’s Eve, when the festive mood rises (also thanks to the wonderful music), you can arrange to meet with friends for a glass of hot wine punsh at one of the many cozy Christmas markets.
Although white Christmas this year probably fails, there is no reason to be sad)
One wise man once said, you should invest in the events and not in the material things. In Berlin you are so well equipped with that stuff: in winter – with the Christmas markets, in other seasons – with concerts, performances, festivals.
Last week we visited the Christmas markets am Gendarmenmarkt and an der Gedächtniskirche (German for Memorial Church) at the Zoologischer Garten in Berlin and relaxed ourselves a bit)
Tamara: I personally think that the nicest Christmas market at Gendarmenmarkt – perhaps thanks to the entrance fee of 1 euro (each year it remains constant) there is the audience much more serious than in other markets. A major disadvantage of this market could be few entertainment options for children (although there is a stage performance, which we unfortunately missed).
Also, this market is not particularly large. This apparently causes “traffic jams” on its narrow “streets”. Otherwise, is the ambience quite cozy and classy. Typically younger Berlin’s habitants love to meet here their friends and colleagues for an after-work party and to celebrate in the cozy surroundings.
For fashionistas, the Christmas market am Gendarmenmarkt is definitely worth a visit, because local handmade fashion & accessories are sold in a separate tent there – leather bags and accessories, jewelry, clothing out of felt, etc. (look for the big white tent in the middle).
Tamara: Also at the Christmas market an der Gedächnitskirche beautiful original articles are sold, however, these are usually decorative and not fashion pieces, such as large lighting stars, Christmas tree ornaments and funny T-shirts with Star Wars and trendy motivs.
One should not forget the beautiful Christmas market “am Roten Rathaus” (German for “at the Red Town Hall”) near Alexanderplatz. It is particularly well suited for the active leisure. There you will find, for example, a skating rink, a Ferris wheel and further attractions for the whole family. The absolute highlight of this market has traditionally been its skating rink, lit up like a disco and equipped with vibrant sound – from classical music to entirely modern.
For history admirers the Christmas market on the Schlossplatz is also worth to visit. In an exclusive area of the old castle of the Princess Charlotte, many beautiful wooden small houses with tasty drinks and culinary delights have being settled. This market might be the first choice for the West Berliners and their guests. For all others the trip back and forth could be a bit far.

Christmas market am Gendarmenmarkt:
When: November 23th until December 31th 2015
Opening times: daily 11-22, Christmas Eve and New Year’s 11-18
Admission ticket: 1 Euro, children under 12 free
Mon-Fri from 11 till 14 admission free (except on December 24-26 and 31th)
Christmas market an der Gedächtniskirche:
Opening times:
Sun-Thu 11-21, Fri-Sat 11-22
Christmas Eve 24.12: 11 to 14
Christmas 25 + 26.12: 13 to 21
Silvester 31.12.: 11-01
New Year 01.01.: 13 to 21
Christmas Market at the Red Town Hall
When: November 23 until December 29, 2015
Opening times: Mon-Fri 12-22, Sat-Sun 11-22,
December: 25-26th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
December 28-29th from 12 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Ice Rink at the Neptune Fountain: The ice rink is open to traffic during the regular opening times, although there are periodic interruptions of 30 minutes for preparing ice.
Christmas market am Schloß Charlottenburg
When: November 23 until December 26, 2015
Opening times:
Monday to Thursday from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Friday to Sunday from 12 a.m. to 10 p.m.
1st and 2nd Christmas Day from 12 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Closed on Christmas Eve
Admission free
